Change of Setting: Playing Smaller Fields
by tke1600
I noticed that all of the online poker rooms that are tracked on PFT are the "big boys" in the online poker world. These poker rooms have a ton of traffic, a lot of fish, and have many huge tournament fields. This can be really fun, but at the same time sometimes be overwhelming. Yes, you can play in a $10 poker tournament on Pokerstars and win $15K, but you also have to fight through 2000 players to do so! If you haven’t noticed, playing these huge tournaments can be very grueling and you can play hours on end without even placing in the money.
I have started to forget what it was like playing in smaller tournaments back in the day with 400-800 people. Online poker has gotten so huge that it is almost impossible to play in one of these tournaments on the big online poker sites. I have recently decided to start searching for quality poker rooms that have the whole package: customer service, nice bonuses, smaller traffic, and security
.
I'm not saying that the "big boys" are not awesome poker rooms, but you want to be able to choose which poker room is best by your own experiences. Playing at the main stream poker rooms will throw a lot of action right in your face. You'll play in $20 re-buy tournaments that have $80,000 prize pools, and you can even sit down at a live game table and play against some of the top online pros. This is a great way to have a ton of fun, but will be very deadly to your bankroll. If your purpose for playing poker is leisure than just jump in to the next $10-$20 game on Poker Stars and you'll get some serious action. If you want to slowly learn the game at a slower pace, you should definitely sign up for one of the smaller poker rooms.
After reading this you still might want to play at Party Poker or Poker Stars because you see an old lady with a bad poker face on T. V., or you see Joe Hachem hugging Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker, but that does not mean that they are necessarily the best poker rooms to play at. If you are just starting out playing poker than it is best to gradually work you way into the poker scene. Playing smaller tournaments and sit-n-go's will help build up your experience and confidence. Those two attributes are the key to becoming a successful poker player.
